'Getting started with Maker{School}' is a free research-informed professional development programme developed by primary teachers and academics from the University of Sheffield. Maker education creates hands-on opportunities for children to tinker, explore, problem-solve, and create. The maker approach in education is rapidly gaining popularity internationally with practicing educators noticing improved engagement, behaviour, and 21st-century skills, such as creativity, collaboration and critical thinking.

The course guides educators through the maker pedagogy, principles of makerspaces, and the development of maker practice in and out of classrooms in four bitesize modules. It offers a structured framework, support and access to ready-to-use resources and activities to help educators unlock the benefits of the maker approach across their cirriculum.

Our programme focuses on support for educators in early years, primary (under 12 years old) and special schools. The course is suitable for any educator in these settings, even if you are new to making or working with limited resources.
