Sheffield Music Academy Music Marathon

Sheffield Music Academy

Since moving a large proportion of our teaching online at the end of March, Sheffield Music Academy have seen the incredible dedication from its students, staff and parents. With our annual end of year concert at Sheffield Cathedral cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we put our heads together to see how we could bring our students, staff and parents together to celebrate all their hard work. We’re currently in training for our most ambitious project to date – a 26.2 hour digital stream of music performance videos from students, staff, parents, friends and musicians from across the region.

As part of our training for the marathon, we have also been creating midweek concerts to take place of our weekly Saturday lunchtime concerts. We have loved celebrating the incredible talents in these videos and cannot wait to showcase them in the marathon!

Our Musical Director, Martin Cropper said:

“We’re thrilled to be bringing our community together with this ambitious project. Making music is at the heart of what we do and to connect musicians from the Sheffield region and beyond is going to be really special.”

Throughout this process, SMA students have gained invaluable skills in recording videos, presenting themselves and adapting to new ways of performing. We are a proud musical community and in times like these it can be easy to lose the sense of community, which is why we are thrilled to be offering this platform for performance to our hard-working cohort.

How you can help!

As a small music education charity, SMA hope that the Music Marathon will encourage new audiences and help raise vital funds lost during lockdown. We are proud to be raising money for our ‘Support a Student’ appeal, which can make the difference that will allow us to continue to inspire young musicians and help them grow as individuals.

There are a range of ways that people can get involved with SMA:

  • Directly donating to the marathon campaign
  • Helping us spread the word on social media using the hashtag #KeepTheMusicPlaying
  • Get in touch with us at to lend a hand or get involved
  • Visit to discover more, learn about our future events and join our musical family!

This mammoth music marathon will be starting at 10am on Saturday 11th July and finishing at 12:12pm on Sunday 12th July. Follow our social media and visit our website for more updates as they come!
